OPEN CALL 2021: DOSTOEVSKY IN TRANSLATION
The European Languages Department of the Linguistics Institute (Russian State University for the Humanities) and the Fyodor Dostoevsky and World Culture Research Center (A.M. Gorky World Literature Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences) invite you to take part in The International Conference
DOSTOEVSKY IN TRANSLATION
to be held on May 28-29, 2021 (at present, a hybrid online/offline format is envisioned, subject to change as future developments permit).
In 2021, we celebrate 200 years since the birth of Fyodor Dostoevsky. In honor of this event, the European Languages Department of the Linguistics Institute (Russian State University for the Humanities) and the Fyodor Dostoevsky and World Culture Research Center (A.M. Gorky World Literature Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences) are holding a “Dostoevsky in Translation” conference.
Dostoevsky has become one of the symbols of Russian culture throughout the world. This conference asks: How is Dostoevsky translated into other languages? Does he change on the way, and if so, how? How is he interpreted in other cultural areas? We invite discussions of both translation in purely linguistic terms and of translation broadly understood as the transfer of Dostoevsky’s works into other cultural forms (cinema, opera, etc.) and even other works of fiction, i.e. the use of recognizably “Dostoevskian” plot devices and concepts in literatures from other cultures. The scope of the conference covers, but is not limited to:
- Dostoevsky translated into other languages
- Dostoevsky and the cinematic language
- Dostoevsky on stage
- Dostoevsky and the language of the opera
- Dostoevsky and world literature
- Dostoevsky’s interpretations in pictorial art
- Submissions and presentations can be made in Russian or English.
Applications should be sent to: eur.lang.conf@yandex.ru
The application should contain the presenter’s full name and professional affiliation, the title of the proposed presentation, and a short abstract (of no more than 250 words).
An e-collection of the conference proceedings is planned for 2022.
Submissions will be accepted until April 20, 2021.
Notifications of acceptance will be emailed on May 1, 2021.
